Urban Consolidation
Consolidation example
What is Urban Consolidation?
It is the redevelopment of parts of cities to gain higher density living. This is achieved by building high-rise apartment complexes, town houses and villa developments with a view.
The image to the left is an example of what consolidation is; going from smaller, single story buildings to larger buildings that can hold more people and businesses.

Mascot
Apartment blocks in Mascot and Sydney Airport sign
Mascot is probably most know for the location of Sydney's airport. It's population is 8,517 people and almost half of them were born overseas. Mascot has many apartment complexes and villa developments due to urban consolidation within the suburb.
So, why is urban consolidation being used?
It is so that there is less land needed for housing people and families and more land for public and recreational affairs such as parks or shopping centres. Urban consolidation isn't only happening in the city area, it is also happening in regular suburban areas - housing properties are becoming smaller and houses are being placed closer together. Since urban consolidation has occurred, there is now more land to build different things on.
One impact from this change is that there is less room for wild animals as their homes are being destroyed. Also, trees and other plants are being cut down and removed to make room for houses and/or other buildings, parks and recreational activities.
