What is urban renewal?
Also called gentrification, urban renewal is the rejuvenation of of older, neglected urban areas. The older areas are often repaired by the younger generations, who change the areas to residential, office and retail areas from warehouse and industrial areas.

- Urban renewal may involve the demolition of buildings and other structures, the relocation of people and businesses as well as the use of eminent domain. In rural areas, this process is called ‘village renewal’, though it may not be exactly the same.

The Rocks
The Rocks, Sydney before and after
The Rocks was established shortly after the First Fleet in 1788. The area had a great reputation as a slum, it was often visited by sailors and prostitutes and was dominated by a gang called 'Rocks Push'. In 1900 a plague broke out. The government though of demolishing the Rocks area as well as Darling Harbour and rebuilding them. Almost 4000 houses were inspected and demolished but these plans soon came to a stop as the first World War had broken out. From 1968-1975, The area of The Rocks was redeveloped. The residents were heavily against the idea at first, but the government took action into redeveloping the area and now it has become a popular destination for both locals and tourists.
